Off the Hair Trigger: How Ryan Reclaimed His Energy and Patience
Client Ryan shares his Mindeo experience
"All the anxiousness that comes with the symptoms I had before... that goes away, and I kind of feel relieved. I have a baseline level of motivation and mental clarity that I didn't have before."
Beyond "Muscling Through": How Ryan Found Mental Clarity and Patience As a Dad
There is a specific kind of exhaustion that sneaks up on you quietly. As Ryan describes it, you don't always realize how much motivation and daily joy you’ve lost until you finally find it again.
Ryan is a father of two young children, and his life revolves around them. He’s the kind of dad who wants to be actively involved in his kids' lives every single day. But for a long time, a combination of physical setbacks made it incredibly difficult to show up the way he wanted to.
Following a bout with Lyme disease and a handful of head injuries from contact sports, Ryan began experiencing severe brain fog, chronic neck pain, and debilitating migraine headaches. The physical toll was obvious, but the emotional cost to his family life was what weighed on him the most.
Living on a Hair Trigger
The compounding fatigue left Ryan with what he describes as "zero patience." Ordinary family situations—the daily messes kids make, or the standard pushback at bedtime—began to feel overwhelming.
"There’s nothing special about those situations," Ryan says. "But I would go from feeling regular to being completely angry. My anxiousness level was just so high all the time that I was always on a kind of a hair trigger."
Like many active people, Ryan's initial instinct was to push through the discomfort. When a local physical therapist recommended he check out Mindeo, his first reaction was to decline. “No, I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. Everything’s cool. I can muscle through,” he told himself.
But then, a minor head injury occurred. Even though it was a small bump, his body reacted as if it were a major trauma. Worried, exhausted, and at his wit's end, Ryan realized that muscling through was no longer an option. He needed a proactive approach to support his brain's recovery.
Rebuilding From a Safe Baseline
When Ryan walked into Mindeo, he was looking for a way to engage his body without triggering a massive physical setback. Traditional exercise environments often demanded too much, but Mindeo’s structured brain-body fitness offered a different path.
After his first session, he felt a sudden sense of hope. He had managed to get his heart rate up, but instead of feeling completely drained, he felt stable.
"It just felt good to get my heart rate up and not feel like I needed a seven-day nap," he recalls.
The sessions are designed to use gentle, deliberate physical movement to support cognitive vitality and nervous system resilience. For Ryan, the consistency paid off quickly. Within about two weeks, he noticed a substantial change in his daily work capacity. He could sit at his computer, type out a business estimate for a customer, and finish the task without needing to lie down afterward. The headaches and neck pain that usually accompanied desk work began to fade away.
Getting the Important Moments Back
The physical relief directly transformed how Ryan experienced his days. The constant background anxiety lifted, replaced by a reliable baseline of mental clarity and motivation.
The most meaningful change, however, didn't happen at a computer or in a session. It happened at home.
By managing his physical symptoms and building up his neurological stamina, Ryan stepped off the hair trigger. The regular, chaotic daily interactions of parenting stopped putting him over the edge. He found his patience again.
"Brain fitness is important to me because I want to be engaged with my children for as long as I’m here," Ryan says. "I want them to have a father they can look back on one day and say, 'You know, he was always understanding.' I lost that early in their life because of my brain injuries—and I’ve gotten that back now. I’m very, very happy about that."
